Understanding Eating Disorders: A Call for Awareness

Updated: Feb 19

Man in distress, holding his head in his hands. He is struggling with an eating disorder.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week runs from 23rd February to 1st March 2026, providing an essential opportunity to shed light on a critical topic: eating disorders can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender.

As a dietitian, I want to raise awareness about the increasing prevalence of eating disorders among males and highlight the importance of recognising the signs that can help our friends and family members.

The Reality of Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are complex mental health issues that can manifest in various forms, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. Contrary to common misconceptions, these disorders do not discriminate; they can affect individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and genders.

Increasing Rates in Males

Recent statistics indicate a troubling rise in eating disorders among males. This shift highlights that the stigma surrounding these conditions may prevent men from seeking help. It’s crucial to understand that eating disorders are not solely a female issue; they can impact anyone. https://youtu.be/Sbbdee4N4yA?si=QedkkgBjMFL5_ZSB

Understanding the Signs Recognising the signs of an eating disorder is vital for early intervention. Here are some common indicators:

  • Behavioural Changes: Noticeable shifts in eating habits, such as skipping meals, excessive dieting, or secretive eating.

  • Physical Symptoms: Unexplained weight loss or gain, changes in physical appearance, or fatigue.

  • Emotional Changes: Increased anxiety around food, withdrawal from social situations, or significant mood swings.

How to Help

If you suspect a friend or family member is struggling with an eating disorder, consider the following steps:

  • Open a Dialogue: Approach the person with empathy and understanding. Let them know you’re concerned and willing to listen.

  • Encourage Professional Help: Gently suggest seeking support from a healthcare professional specialising in eating disorders.

  • Be Supportive: Offer your unwavering support and remind them that they are not alone in this journey.

Conclusion: As we observe Eating Disorders Awareness Week, let us commit to breaking the stigma surrounding these serious mental health conditions. By fostering open conversations and supporting those in need, we can create a more understanding environment for everyone affected by eating disorders.
